"Students should see this combination of working together with industry and knowledge institutes"

Our generation faces many socio-economic challenges. How do we keep healthcare affordable and sustainable with an aging population and rising healthcare costs? How will we produce heat, energy and materials when fossils fuels are depleted? Together with its partners, Chemelot InSciTe looks for innovative solutions. Students of the UM Video team made a reportage about the grand opening of the biomedical facility and kick-off symposium on September 28th, 2015. Watch the video here:

Combining strengths
Chemelot InSciTe’s RT&D facilities are located at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus in Geleen, where over 50 companies in life science and material science have settled. Danielle Curfs, Program Manager Biomedical explains: “We are trying to bring different parties together, because more minds have more knowledge than only one”. One of InSciTe’s facilities is the biomedical laboratory, that was festively opened on 28th of September, 2015. The second facility is the biobased pilot plant, which will be used to scale up the processes for the production of new biobased building blocks. This pilot plant will be put into operation early 2016. In this open innovation environment, the most dedicated experts work together to solve these complex challenges.

InSciTe combines the strengths of initiators Brightlands Chemelot Campus, Technical University of Eindhoven, Maastricht University/University Medical Center+, DSM and Provincie Limburg, as Marja van Dieijen, head of the executive board of Maastricht University Medical Center+ explains. InSciTe is always looking for new partnerships, says Chris Duxbury, Facility Manager Biomedical at InSciTe: “We need small start-up companies and individual entrepreneurs to get involved with activities of InSciTe to help develop InSciTe itself as well as the Campus and the region”.
Students at InSciTe
Albert Scherpbier, dean of the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences explains why Maastricht University is involved in InSciTe: “It is very important that students see this combination of working together with industry and knowledge institutes”. Collaborations with industry and other knowledge institutions provides opportunities to elevate academic education and research programs by enhancing their student's knowledge through real world in-field placement.
