Working towards living vessels and valves
In the Netherlands, over 1 million people suffer from vascular diseases like peripheral artery disease (PAD) and chronic venous insufficiency, costing Dutch society alone over M€ 800 per year. Access to the vascular system, e.g. for dialysis in case of renal disease, is often problematic. Vascular diseases are primarily caused by atherosclerosis, infections and thrombosis. In an ageing population, the incidence of these diseases continues to rise.
Material research and developments in InSciTe’s cardiovascular area will eventually lead to living vessels or valve to replace the damaged tissue and restore normal function.
